Discussion Questions #4

Question 1.  According to Berger publicity influences consumers by telling all of us that we are not adequate in the way we are and the way our lives are.  It also suggests that by buying a product we can change that and make our lives richer.  The mechanism it uses to do this is to show people who have been transformed as a result of a product, and are now envied.  And as Berger indicates, this state of being envied is called glamour and publicity is the process of creating glamour.  This is significant because it is a very effective way of selling products.  You make someone feel inadequate and then create an illusion that a certain product can produce the ideal life or lifestyle and thus curing this feeling of inadequacy.

Question 2.  These differences are important because in oil paintings they are not trying to sell something.  The paintings reflect what someone has or had in the present, while publicity is representing a future possibility with a means to achieve it.  The method in which publicity attains this goal is by showing scene after scene of people changing their lives as a result of buying certain products.   And the changing of their lives includes themselves, their homes and even their relationships.  Publicity also uses another method in which to sell products and that is to play upon people’s fears.  Specifically the fear of not being desirable or to be unenviable.

Question 3.  Berger provides three examples of dreams that are used to sell products and one of these he calls, The Dream of later Tonight.  This type of dream shows people greatly enjoying each other’s company with all the participants being good looking and very well dressed.  It also shows certain individuals who appear to be greatly envied, which plays upon the desire to be the life of the party and the most glamorous.  This type of imagery is very effective for selling products like clothing, jewelry, perfumes, alcohol and cigarettes, because if one does not own the finest of these products, one can not even begin to achieve this type of dream.

Write a draft of your opening paragraph based on Chapter 3.2 Opening Paragraphs from English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate

Our country has been impacted with a movement called “BLACK LIVES MATTER” a manifestation which was started after George Floyd was killed in May of this year by a Minneapolis Officer. African American people protested all over the country for weeks until they got justice for their beloved national. What is not different or less important is the disappearance and murder of Vanessa Guillen. A twenty-year-old U.S. Army Soldier with Mexican descendant who was missing since April and killed the same month at the armory room where she worked by one of her U.S. Army partners with a hammer. Her death body was recently found on the previous mentioned location, and I do not see a movement call “HISPANICS LIVES MATTER” or neither seen this on the news or at least not as much as Floyd’s case. In both cases a life was lost, and the same value must be given to them.

In the article , “Praising Effort or Performance?”, the author states that electronic devices are a distraction for students. She says scores in school are not enough to achieve success. Also, parents should change the way they perceive raising kids to succeed in life. In addition, the author states that it’s better encourage children’s effort and teach them life skills. Instead of encourage their academic performance. I agree with the author because academy success prepares you for the test, but life skills prepares you for life.

Discussion Question #3

Part 1.  According Berger, in episode 2 of Ways of Seeing, the main distinction between nakedness and the the nude female form as represented in traditional Western art is that being naked is to be oneself, and the nude, is to be seen naked by others and yet not be recognized for oneself.  A nude, he adds, has to be seen as an object, and in this object the female(s) are not seen naked as they are, but instead naked as you, the observer, see them.  These differences are significant because in the nudes the nakedness is a sight for those who are dressed.  And these differences could also be seen today in nude magazines such as Playboy.  The pictures in these magazines are catered to the sexual desires of the mainly male observers with the seductive and unnatural poses.

Part 2.  According to Berger, these Western works have often depicted and defined men as being dominant and women being subservient and the lesser of the two sexes.  The Creation paintings even depicted women as being guilty for the first sin and subsequently making God rule that women were to obey men.  As a result of this many of these paintings depicted women as always trying to please men with a sort of guilty look on their faces.  And yes these depictions still influence, although a lot less, the roles of men and women in society today.

Part 3.  In the nudes of Western art the mirror became a symbol for vanity of women, picturing herself how men see her.  She sees herself mainly as a sight, which means a sight for men.  The mirror also indicates how beauty was judged in those paintings, in a competitive way.  The prettiest, as seen by men, was illustrated effectively in the painting, The Judgement of Paris, as this painting depicted a beauty contest.  He also discusses the significance of the female gaze in these paintings.  The gaze, whether she is looking at a mirror or out to the audience, is always to see what someone else is thinking of her, mainly men, and is she pleasurable to them.  These same types of gazes and expressions, he adds, can be seen in modern day photographs, like from a female magazine.   These expressions are submissive with a calculating charm to the man she knows is looking at her.  This example clearly shows that even today, women are still looked upon as objects of beauty rather than just themselves.

Discussion question 3

1 – Berger uses the example of Kenneth Clark book to explain the difference between “being naked” and “nude” in which Clark says that the nude is a form of art but being naked is simply being without clothes. Berger has different thoughts about it, he explains that “to be Naked is to be oneself and to be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for oneself”. This means that a naked person is the one that is peacefully by it self with no public but a nude is the painting of a ‘naked’ person or people who are being seen by other. As John Berger says, I also believe that “nudes” are created from artists for their own pleasure.

2 – According to Berger, Western work of art represent the different roles of a man and women in the society. Women are shown languid, to feed an appetite, not to have any of their own. Females are expressing their desire to satisfy a man needs. Berger uses the example of “The judgement of Paris” painting in which the artist paints a man handing an apple to the women he think is more beautiful. As in nowadays society, beauty represents competition. We are seen by man as fishes in the river, they want to catch the best looking one. Man are seen as more dominant than woman. Most women won’t approach a man even if they are interested on them. Instead we will look submissive and sometimes weaker than man just to call their attention. In conclusion, I think that this pictures represent the reality of man and women roles in today society with the exemption of a few women who in some cases are more dominant than man.

3 – “The mirror became a symbol of women vanity” Berger says. As in the painting, “Susanna and the elders” looks at her self in the mirror to see how she is being seen in the eyes of a man. In the following painting, a women is naked holding a mirror and looking at her self. The mirror is being used as an excuse to blame the women whom has been painted totally naked for the artist pleasure but condemning the women by calling the paint “Vanity”. He related this to “The judgement of Paris” which is transform into a beauty contest. The idea remains the same. Man looking at women and judging them. In today’s society, women are being seen and judged by man. It is as a competition, where beauty and perfection wins. Woman try to look perfect to the eyes of man and not be judged by the society. Make up, plastic surgery, provocative clothes are some of the options that women use nowadays to persuade man.

  1. In ways of seeing John Berger describes the nakedness and the nude for a women in the paintings. john Berger said ” being naked is seeing without clothes” and nude is how the women were seen and judge  of being naked by other people. This is significant because it shows the inequality how women were being used.
  2. John Berger states that western works has depicted and defined by men and women. The example is in the garden Adam and eve and how they realize they are naked and the blame on god towards the woman.
  3. John Berger explains how the mirror is significant and how its depicting the women in the painting. The mirror is significant because the women liked to look at themselves while  they are naked.
