  1. Berger mention “Naked is the oneself but nude is seen by others and yet not recognized by oneself”because of others individual interest and desire. These two are  significant difference, one is treating women an object and not letting exercise their freedom, on the other hand nakedness is done by there own wish, i don’t see any issue. people  have right to to do anything with there own body. nakedness  could  could be helpful   for study. nakedness have shown in my  anatomy subject for more deep understanding of human reproductive system or study human body in general.
  2. The western work of art depicted and defined inequality between men and women, men as superior and dominate over women ,treating women as an object for painter art to satisfy the mens desire. However the present society have completely change. women and men are equivalent in terms of power and freedom. women can denied if something they don’t getting pleasure doing. there is still nudity this days but the difference is those nudity have posted by their own wish for advertisement of brands or to gain popularity such as models.
  3. The significance of mirror in painting is a symbol of vanity. women look at mirror to picture herself how the mens looked at her. first thing she saw her as sight, sight for men. The painting of female to painter own pleasure. Nakedness have become a uniform for women means nakedness has consider same as wearing clothes. Berger discuss  some painting of men and women where men look at women eyes as true lover but the women eye had looked  to the spectator meaning the painting is for mens spectator pleasure. The number of female nude painting is enormous in Europe but i believe that number had decrease this days.

Ways of Seeing Episode 2

  1. One of the main premises in this episode is Berger’s distinction between nakedness and the nude female form as it is traditionally represented in Western art. What are the differences between these things and why are these differences significant? Do they apply to images you have encountered in your experience?

According to Berger’s distinction  nakedness and the nude female form as it traditionally represented in western art because women were judged to see how they were looked. Berger discusses the concept of the female nakedness is to be one’s self and to be nude is to be seen naked by others and yet not recognized for one’s self. Berger’s distinction is used to help make the argument that in order for a naked body to become a nude. The nude in European oil painting is usually presented as an ideal subject. It is said to be an expression of the European humanist spirit. I don’t think that they apply to images because such nakedness and the nude images are lined up by their painters for the pleasure of the male.

2.  According to Berger, how have Western works of art depicted and defined different roles for men and women? According to Berger, what is the significance of this? Do these depictions influence the ways we think of the differences between men’s and women’s roles in society today?

The western work depicted and defined roles for men and women  as a superior and inferior in their presence. Women are treated as abstractions. In European oil painting where women were categorized as a subject to be a nude. Berger further illustrates European paintings of female nudes between the painter’s , owner’s and viewer’s individualism. He added men’s don’t have the same image of themselves or constant reflection or even men’s are not central in the European oil art. Berger believes that this inequality between men and women exists heavily in our society.  For instance, the beauty of women from the early age was portrayed through nude paintings emphasizing a woman’s body. Similarly, current advertisements still emphasize a woman’s beauty through their physical attributes. Men’s are depicted to be hard workers and providers for the family. Men’s are associated with strength  which automatically makes them superior. For example, older paintings or artwork depicts men in horses or in war. They are depicted with immense strength and are associated with the “provider” role for their family. Current advertisements might not emphasize directly their strength however, they are still shown to be the “provider” of the family. Advertisements usually depict women in the kitchen or laundry while men are frequently seen in car, construction, hardware goods advertisements.

3. How does Berger describe the significance of the mirror in paintings depicting women? What does this object say about the ways beauty is defined in these paintings? What does Berger say about the depiction of the female gaze in the paintings he discusses? What kinds of more contemporary examples does he relate this to, and what significance does  he draw from these connections between older European art and depictions of women today?

The mirror painting depicts women to look at herself  and it reminds them how they look and how they should look.According to Berger the significance of the mirror in painting is vanity to the women. In the oil European painting Suzanna seems to look at herself in the mirror, picturing herself as men see her. She sees herself first and foremost as a sight which means as a sight for men. Thus the mirror is a symbol of vanity of women yet the male hypocrisy in this blatant. Berger states the culture of privileged Europeans reinforced female nude, which depicted women as passive receptacles for the spectator’s sexual gaze. These did exist for the viewer’s projection of a fantasy. According to the Berger the paintings in film cannot be identified because they are so immensely exaggerated. Many painting shows are idealized and very unreal.

Discussion Question 3

  1.   1. Berger is saying that nakedness is pure. Being naked is just a lack of clothes. While nudity is expressly for the purpose of being seen. Nudity is what you find in art, while nakedness is just the human body without clothes. Being naked seems to derive from shame, whereas to be nude seems to come from a source of pride. Nakedness in art doesn’t hold back, showing all the raw emotion regardless of whether it is good or bad. Nudity in art is to show nature in its purest form.
  2. In art men and women do have their different values. Since art has been male dominant it has usually followed a male perspective. Men are depicted as brave, and noble while women as something to desire or achieve.
  3. Women’s nakedness in art is usually to show the beauty of women in art. Men are depicted as naked many times throughout art history, so male artist drawing women as naked is equal treatment.

Ways of seeing epidose 2

  1. John Berger in “Ways of Seeing”, distinguishes “nakedness” from “nudity” in the European tradition, with nakedness simply being the state of having no cloths on and nudity being a form of artistic representation. Berger mentioned in the video that, “Being naked is just being yourself but being nude in the artistic sense of the word is being without cloths for the purpose of being looked at. A naked body has to become an object of a gaze in order to become a nude representation.” Being naked means being without any costume that you put on but being nude means that you become your own costume. Women are there for men to look at, men act and women appear.” While men do the looking, women watch themselves being looked at. What’s more, he mentioned that women should take care of every action she does because women’s actions are the ways that indicates the way the girl should be observed. On the other hand, men’s actions are not judged by people as women. He won’t even have a bad reputation as a woman can does.
  2. Berger was discussing the difference between male and female presence. His argument was basically power for men is extrinsic while power for women is intrinsic. A man’s presence dependents on what he is capable of doing to you or for you. It depends on his power. If the promise is large and credible his presence is striking. If it is small or incredible, he is found to have little presence. On the other hand, a woman’s presence expresses her own attitude to herself, and defines what can and cannot be done to her. Her presence is manifest in voice, opinions, clothes, friends. John Berger explains the process: To be born a woman is so hard as women are not free to do whatever they want as men due to the society and how they are going to be in people’s eyes. She has a limited space. There are always traditions that she had ro obey and if she didn’t do so, she would be judged. She always has to explain everything to everybody if she did something wrong because how she appears to others, and importantly how she appears to men. Society today even creates this image that men have more power over women, and when the roles are reversed, as displayed in the male nude advertisements, it causes public outrage. It’s true that male nudity is getting the new presence in the modern society and is becoming increasingly more normal, however, one can still assume a few reasons as to why there was an opposition to display of the naked men on the posters. Men also don’t want to be seen as having less power and vulnerability. Female nudity is associated with beauty and erotic. It’s meant to be unthreatening. Male nudity is much more challenging. Society in general is uncomfortable with seeing it in public. At the end, nudity is still not totally accepted.
  3. The male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world from a masculine perspective that sees women as a sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer only. John Berger observed that “men act and women appear.” Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.” Mirror was often used as a symbol of the vanity of woman. You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, you put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting Vanity. Therefore, you had depicted for your own pleasure. The real function of a mirror is to make the woman treat herself.

The image performs the work because it is related to the text of the image, it presents two different situations such as the situation of countries at war or internal conflicts represented in this case by the burning house (Middle East) and on the other hand the Animals across the street relaxed and looking represent the United States and Europe, countries better positioned economically and in good condition. It is a genuine way of presenting these problems of great magnitude and in a way the observer relates it and understands the message that is clear and precise.

discussion 2#

1.It used to be only one version and it is a context. That context was divided by a location like a church. Now it is possible to find many replications. The context can be shaped by anything surrounding any of the replications. Art books can focus on specific parts of the painting and do not show the whole thing. Before any replication could be made there was only one way to see a painting now there is a different meaning for every painting for everyone who sees it.

2.Unless you see a painting in person you will not be able to feel the true awe. A screen has flickering lights. It means that you will not be able to see the stillness that you would in person. A camera can move in or zoom around and they can even play music if you are watching on the TV. Even in a book you need to flip the page.

3.Replications can be seen in magazines, advertisements, newspapers or/and on the TV. We have to make sense of all of them in this context. In a way paintings have always been information, but in our modern world we have to understand everything in its specific context.

The image is powerful  that everybody has different perceptions on dress color. The photograph is popular for its color perception. When viewers looked at the dress they perceived the dress pictured was colored black and royal blue ,or white and gold. The picture reveals the reality of human color perception. Berger “ Way of seeing” can be related in this picture because it tells a lot. The dress is one but it represents different colors to different people. The act of seeing something is not as objective as we might at first think. When we  see the art or pictures is conditioned by habit and convention because we tend to believe a large part of seeing depends upon habit and convention.we are conditioned to see the world in a different perspective. Our perspective centers everything on the eye of the beholders. Our habits and conventions go beyond just what the eye sees at the moment. The photograph emphasizes that even though people who appear identical can have different but equally correct points of view on the same topic.

To sum up, in this picture the perception about the color is different for different people. I have somehow seen both colors at different times. When looking at the photo of the dress , our brain is trying to figure out if it’s a blue and black dress in yellow light  or a white and gold dress with a blue shadow over it.

  1. People sees a painting and tents the meaning of painting through habits and conventions. Our generation will look at painting as different way as compare to people form 19th century because our way of living has drastic change. People look at the painting a see meaning through their own experience. Therefore is not natural.
  2. The camera has changed our by giving more closer look of painting and showing a different perspective. Through the device the painting come to us rather than we physically present where the painting is , Berger mentioned “seeing the painting as physically present will make feel the authenticity of the painting and could show you the real meaning. As well as seeing a painting in screen can deceive the meaning of the painting actual meaning. Berger says “stillness and silence  of painting can be striking” means painting can’t speak but it will make you thinking and start questioning yourself standing at one place.
  3. When he describe painting a “form of information” means painting could be source of information. Later he mention “picture were like words rather than holy relic ” after he shows the painting of artist Caravaggio to the group of children who doesn’t know anything about the artist  was able to know the sexuality of artist by looking at the picture and taking out the detail of image comparing to their own experience or their  knowledge. Reproduction of art had made accessibly to many people. Through this art has loss a real value of art. People had art hanging in wall and comparing themself and others to the art.

Advertising warfare flared between Mercedes and BMW, after Mercedes congratulated its competitor on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding by publishing a satirical video. And the content of the clip was “Happy Birthday, and thank you for a hundred years of competition,” it added, “It was thirty years before the hundredth a bit boring,” in a sign from Mercedes that it had preceded BMW in the industry. But the BMW response came strong and sarcastic, so I published an ad for pictures of a Mercedes truck transporting BMW vehicles, and said, “Thank you for transporting pleasure.”

The advertising field is always burning between companies, in an attempt to attract the largest number of customers. With sarcastic methods, the topic has become more fun, interesting and creative, and the only winner of all this is the consumer.
