Question 1

Let me first say that this blog assignment is very ambiguous as the answers to these questions should be specific to what you are writing about and who the audience will be.  And since these are general questions based on planning your writing we don’t actually know these two things.  Are we answering the questions in general, or specifically to our first writing assignment.

  1.  The purpose of most essays is to educate, announce and persuade.  While entertainment is usually not necessary it could enhance the other three, and in some cases it may be one of the more important purposes.
  2. Our classmates and professor may be interested as well as anyone interested in the topic and also have access to the essay.  The reading says that the writing should be catered to at least our classmates.
  3. The main people who would be impacted by an essay are those that read it and who also didn’t know the information contained in it.  Specifically a reader who is mostly ignorant to the information, and the conclusions set forth by that information, may be the most impacted because the essay may have changed their mind about a specific toipic.
  4. The reader may not know anything about a topic or they may know a lot.  One must know the audience to know how much information to put in, or to know how much explanation is necessary.
  5. What the reader needs to know to understand the point of the essay depends on the topic of the essay.  But then again it also depends on who the audience is.  If you write an essay on Quantum Mechanics for your Peers or for a general audience will have a huge impact on how you write it.  The wording and amount of explanation in the essay would vary immensely.
  6. From the reading, writers can garner a reader’s interest by doing the following:
    • Beginning by quoting an expert on the respective topic or an inspirational individual.
    • Beginning by offering some statistical evidence that is both informative and intriguing.
    • Opening with a striking mental image.
    • Appealing to the reader’s emotions.
    • Raising a question or series of questions.
    • Presenting an explanation or rationalization for the essay.
    • Including a personal anecdote.
    • Stating in the middle of a story with the conclusion of the story existing as the first sentence in the conclusion paragraph.
  7. The level of language is once again catered to who the audience will be.  If it will only be read by peers than more complicated jargon will be used.  The potential vocabulary level will also be dictated by the audience.
  8. The tone of the topic will once again be dictated by the audience and also the subject matter.  One will not try to write a comical essay for a serious and sad topic.

Question 2

In light of the recent protests sparked by the unjustified and tragic murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minnesota Police, many more of us have become aware of the inequalities African Americans face in regard to how they are treated by the police here in the United States. These inequalities were always known by some, including Emory Douglas, former Minister of Culture for the Black Panthers, who was also an artist, designer and illustrator.  In 2015 Mr. Douglas remixed, or re-imaged, a poster for the Black Lives movement that he originally created and published in the Black Panthers periodical back in 1976.  The images when placed side by side, show that although things may appear to be better for African Americans on the surface, they are still fighting for equal justice under the law that still eludes them some 40 years later.

This sentence explains why a good writer should be a good reader in the first place. It may not always be easy for the author to convey the events and feelings that occurred in their dream world to the paper. And if the writer is not a reader, it becomes even harder to look at their own writing through the eyes of the reader, which may cause worse problems than you think.

Part 2:

Write a draft of your opening paragraph based on Chapter 3.2 Opening Paragraphs from the English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate

The reading on opening paragraph teaches us how to write an introduction to an essay, and moreover how to formulate a strong thesis statement. An introduction is the beginning of the essay where the reader will be introduced to the general idea of the essay. It has the potential to set reader’s interest. We will be able to capture a reader’s interest if we are successful in beginning our introduction with an attention getter that will hook the reader. We have to make sure that it is related to the main idea. We can garner our reader’s interest if we can include a quote by an expert or an inspirational individual, some striking statistical information, raise questions regarding our topic, putting forward our rationale on the topic, or some personal anecdote. If these are done successfully, our paper will have the ability to intrigue a reader’s mind and they would want to read our essay. We also have to make sure that we use transition words that will connect our ideas throughout the paper. This will ensure the fluidity of our essay. The readers will be directed to our idea smoothly.

The most important thing in an introduction is to state your thesis statement which should be backed up by our discussions in the body paragraphs. A thesis statement is the main point of our essay. It is the writer’s view on the topic. It should be specific, strong and confident. It is normally one long sentence that should be mentioned at the end of the introduction. If the introduction is well organized, the reader can predict what our paper is going to be about.

A strong thesis statement should be specific, precise, arguable, able to provide examples, forceful and should display confidence in our argument. It becomes specific when we narrow down a broad subject where it comes down to a specific view. For example, climate change is a broad subject, but we can scrutinize the topic and talk about how carbon dioxide emission from automobiles and factories are impacting global warming as evidenced by increased glacial melting, increased atmospheric temperature, and raised sea level.  Such thesis statement is more specific. Similarly, it is also precise to its idea when we particularly bring up global warming, increased carbon dioxide emission and melting of the glaciers. Moreover, our readers are provided with a space where they can argue. They can argue with their information about global warming and climate change. Likewise, we can claim that thesis with research studies, comparing carbon dioxide emissions within a time period, and etc. We can also provide valid examples from credible sources. The tone should be bold and decisive. The reader should have an impression that we believe in what we are saying. It will also help us ensure a confident attitude in our writing.  However, in college essays, we should avoid writing “should” in a thesis because it can sound authoritarian and condescending.

An example of a thesis statement: The carbon dioxide emission from automobiles and factories are impacting global warming with increased glacial melting, raised atmospheric temperature, and higher sea level.

The three subjects are located in the center of the photograph Evans in the right side and the cops in the left side. It is possible to see the predominant green in the right background. On the hand, in the left side the color black is predominant. It is also visible that Evans is the only one who’s skin is black, and all of the cops are apparently are white. The image has a clear division down the middle where we can see the protest vs oppression, which she is about to be pulled out of her side. The movement reviews the peacefulness in one side and the brute force from the other one. It is picture not painting, and the woman is visible in active situation, she is not in a weak position. This will be proved through analyzing replicas, color, sounds, positioning and movement of the image.

Write a draft of your opening paragraph based on Chapter 3.2 Opening Paragraphs from English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate.

The opening paragraph or the introduction of an essay is the starting point of an essay. And this paragraph carries a good value of the essay. In this paragraph, the author should include the theme of the essay by giving a statement with emotions or a mental perspective. That’s how the reader can engage with the essay with interest. However, a strong thesis statement is a must. The reader can guess what the essay will be from the thesis statement. If the statement seems good, then the reader will continue his reading. Another thing is pointless things should be avoided in this paragraph in order to hold the attention of the reader. Sometimes a reader can get the same vibes what the author is trying to say and that’s like ‘’hit the jackpot’’ for a good beginning. Clearly, the beginning of the essay has the power to read forward and it can be done by putting some important details with a strong thesis statement and also a statement with emotions. However, the article has significant and accommodating strategies that we can use to convey a good start of our scholastic paper.
