Part 2:

Write a draft of your opening paragraph based on Chapter 3.2 Opening Paragraphs from the English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate

The reading on opening paragraph teaches us how to write an introduction to an essay, and moreover how to formulate a strong thesis statement. An introduction is the beginning of the essay where the reader will be introduced to the general idea of the essay. It has the potential to set reader’s interest. We will be able to capture a reader’s interest if we are successful in beginning our introduction with an attention getter that will hook the reader. We have to make sure that it is related to the main idea. We can garner our reader’s interest if we can include a quote by an expert or an inspirational individual, some striking statistical information, raise questions regarding our topic, putting forward our rationale on the topic, or some personal anecdote. If these are done successfully, our paper will have the ability to intrigue a reader’s mind and they would want to read our essay. We also have to make sure that we use transition words that will connect our ideas throughout the paper. This will ensure the fluidity of our essay. The readers will be directed to our idea smoothly.

The most important thing in an introduction is to state your thesis statement which should be backed up by our discussions in the body paragraphs. A thesis statement is the main point of our essay. It is the writer’s view on the topic. It should be specific, strong and confident. It is normally one long sentence that should be mentioned at the end of the introduction. If the introduction is well organized, the reader can predict what our paper is going to be about.

A strong thesis statement should be specific, precise, arguable, able to provide examples, forceful and should display confidence in our argument. It becomes specific when we narrow down a broad subject where it comes down to a specific view. For example, climate change is a broad subject, but we can scrutinize the topic and talk about how carbon dioxide emission from automobiles and factories are impacting global warming as evidenced by increased glacial melting, increased atmospheric temperature, and raised sea level.  Such thesis statement is more specific. Similarly, it is also precise to its idea when we particularly bring up global warming, increased carbon dioxide emission and melting of the glaciers. Moreover, our readers are provided with a space where they can argue. They can argue with their information about global warming and climate change. Likewise, we can claim that thesis with research studies, comparing carbon dioxide emissions within a time period, and etc. We can also provide valid examples from credible sources. The tone should be bold and decisive. The reader should have an impression that we believe in what we are saying. It will also help us ensure a confident attitude in our writing.  However, in college essays, we should avoid writing “should” in a thesis because it can sound authoritarian and condescending.

An example of a thesis statement: The carbon dioxide emission from automobiles and factories are impacting global warming with increased glacial melting, raised atmospheric temperature, and higher sea level.

The three subjects are located in the center of the photograph Evans in the right side and the cops in the left side. It is possible to see the predominant green in the right background. On the hand, in the left side the color black is predominant. It is also visible that Evans is the only one who’s skin is black, and all of the cops are apparently are white. The image has a clear division down the middle where we can see the protest vs oppression, which she is about to be pulled out of her side. The movement reviews the peacefulness in one side and the brute force from the other one. It is picture not painting, and the woman is visible in active situation, she is not in a weak position. This will be proved through analyzing replicas, color, sounds, positioning and movement of the image.

Write a draft of your opening paragraph based on Chapter 3.2 Opening Paragraphs from English Composition: Connect, Collaborate, Communicate.

The opening paragraph or the introduction of an essay is the starting point of an essay. And this paragraph carries a good value of the essay. In this paragraph, the author should include the theme of the essay by giving a statement with emotions or a mental perspective. That’s how the reader can engage with the essay with interest. However, a strong thesis statement is a must. The reader can guess what the essay will be from the thesis statement. If the statement seems good, then the reader will continue his reading. Another thing is pointless things should be avoided in this paragraph in order to hold the attention of the reader. Sometimes a reader can get the same vibes what the author is trying to say and that’s like ‘’hit the jackpot’’ for a good beginning. Clearly, the beginning of the essay has the power to read forward and it can be done by putting some important details with a strong thesis statement and also a statement with emotions. However, the article has significant and accommodating strategies that we can use to convey a good start of our scholastic paper.

Silence Speaks Volumes. It sends a powerful message   that we don’t agree or are not going to agree along with someone’s saying or action. The photograph of a young African American women   standing still and silent in the face of two state troopers in riot gear in a Black live matters movement, shows her strong disagreement yet brave, courageous and lionhearted. Brave are those who prioritize their dreams over their fears. Being fearless is a myth. This one speaks more to the movement and what the demonstrators are trying to accomplish. Black live matters movement is much more than protestor and officer.

Ieshia Evans, a Strong Female in Western Art

I am writing this essay to educate and spark discussion on the use of gender roles in art with respect to the Black Lives Matter movement and the photo of Ieshia Evans. Anyone who is interested in the gender art roles or the Black Lives Matter movement may find this interesting. People who have an interest in modern photographic art, Race relation or gender roles in art may find this impactful in their studies. The reader most likely will already have some basic information on the Black Lives matter movement and also some knowledge of John Berger’s ways of seeing. A hook as an introductory sentence will be crucial to keep the reader’s interest. A hook that describes the violence involved in Alton Sterling’s death would be appropriate. Because this is a college level essay, I will use language appropriate for academic study. This paper will feature a solemn tone. This is a serious subject that deserves to be discussed with the gravity it encompasses.

On July 9th 2016, in Baton Rouge, two white police officers were caught on video camera shooting and killing Alton Sterling. A young New York nurse, Ieshia Evans, who traveled to Louisiana to protest this injustice, stepped ahead of the crowd and made her stand. She was photographed at the perfect moment, and that moment was eternally frozen in time. John Berger in Ways of Seeing discusses gender roles in western art. He maintains that a woman’s passivity in art is a result of western culture’s view of women as objects to be observed for their frail beauty. While images of women in art throughout western history have shown them in a passive role, this image shows a woman in a position of power resisting the male police officers effortlessly.

The turmoil caused by the murder of an African American citizen George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis on May 25 continues to resonate globally, as African Americans continue to protest in the streets against racism and police brutality. Despite American propaganda as the “land of dreams and freedoms” that spread since the beginning of the last century, this was not the case for black Americans, who were not equivalent to white Americans in most aspects of life. Black citizens were subject to the principle of inequality, and did not stage rebellions until the 1960s – which continue today – as a result of the emergence of revolutionary personalities of black Americans, such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King who brought about important changes in the history of blacks in America. Therefore, the movement, “Blacks Life Matters,” is an extension of the long struggle for African-Americans in American history.

People use many methods to resist and release their emotions, such as aggressive behavior, while others feel fear. The police became heroes. However, the violent law enforcement has been opposed. Violence is not a positive method that people use because there are many negative  consequences. Although people use violence for a reason, it is still not  the best way.  People should avoid using violence.
