Discussion question #1

Prompt for discussion question #1

In these three videos, the smarthistory presenters attempt to answer three big questions: “why art matters,” how the ways we look at a work shape our experiences and interpretations, “how art can help us analyze.”

Choose one of these questions and write about whether or not you think the presenters make a convincing case and pose any questions you might have. (Don’t forget to both post your own response and respond to two of your classmates.)

“How art can help you analyze” by Amy E. Herman talks about how doctors, nurses and lawyers could improve their visual activity and communication skills. Studying of art helps investigate what workers want because it aids them to notice the small details they want, which would help a doctor in treating an injury or a police officer in investigating a crime scene. Each time you look at a portrait or an art, your brain tries to work to make a sense of the visual information it’s receiving. When looking at Rene Magritte’s Time Transfixed, we’ll find out a train whose origin and destination are unknown is orgining from a fireplace and a smoke from the locomotive appears to flow through the chimney. But where is the fire? Where is this train heading to? Why no train tracks? What happened to the candles? There would be numerous questions but no answers. The more time you spend analyzing a piece of art, the more you are able to stimulate both unconscious and conscious brain functions. Doing so can increase your analytical and problem-solving skills in everyday life. A doctor would be better studying the symptoms of his patients. A police officer has the ability to investigate the crime scene quicker and notice the small details he wants which would make him successful in his job. Workers would be able to solve problems from new and different perspectives as art aid us in investigating and this would be the best skill that anyone can have.

I agree with you that how the art can make better to the doctors, nurses and police to improve their visual acuity and communication skills during investigations and emergencies. How art make you better to analyze the situation.

    2. Jonathan

I agree that art does helps doctors and police because it is easier for them to analyze and visually see a situation better.

    3. Tytiana Staine

I agree with you because art does make you analyze things in different ways and makes your brain do some extra work to interpret your surroundings and art.

Amy E. Herman’s ted talk expresses that through art analysis, it can help train those to enhance their communication skills by describing what they’re seeing .Observation and analyzation can be helpful in our day to day lives or even in very important situations. For example, Amy mentions a cop reporting for backup and describing the severity of the situation. But once the backup arrives, they notice that the scene isn’t what the officer described at all. This is what she means when she says that art can sometimes save lives . When you walk into a museum it is the most self aware place to be in, why because everyone is looking at certain works of art and analyzing the details to create it . They’re using their eyes to find its meaning, hidden message, or even just to enjoy its form of structure, some even formulate questions as to why something may look the way it does. In our daily routine, we rely on our eyes to get us through the day and our words to respond to others. But if we go back to a basic format of learning we would say in order to teach a child words we use a picture book which then lets a child understand what a specific item is to a specific word. we notice that when we point to a word with an image above it a child will then try to formulate the word and point to the image hinting that they see what you are doing and understand what that image is . So that later on when they see a truck rolling down the street, they will be able to identify it. We use art as an aid to teach us how to observe , identify ,and create descriptions so that we may progress in life and our careers.

Your ending sentence is very significant . I like the way you mention that ” we use art as aid to teach ,identify and create descriptions ” . Suggest, think and imagine will be probably what Art rely on I mean , my Point on view

“Why art matters?” by Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris communicates that art makes a significant impact in people’s life. For centuries, art is everywhere, and it develops human’s brain, their imagination. Art matters, because it is the power of creation, and each person forms his own vision of life, of how to interpret certain colors, shapes etc. When people spend time looking at some art pieces, they start thinking, they are searching for the meaning and purpose hidden there. Many people can self-express and communicate with others through their paintings, sculptures, architectural constructions, and there are no words necessary to be understood by viewers.

This video is a pleasant introduction to art for me, I go to museums sometimes, but I did not realize that I have to spend more time looking at art, and there are many interesting details I can focus on. When I looked at paintings, I knew it is the painter’s creativity, but I never searched deeper, I was not aware that there should be a message for the viewers.

I agree with you because art is such a beautiful thing and it bring out your imagination

  6. Gabriela Medina

I agree, with the response due to being able to visually point out the visual view points and ideas of the art work. This also helps for a much better understanding.

  7. tytiana staine

“Why art matters” was a very convincing video. The authors Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris use points in the video to help listeners understand the importance of art . A point I agree with is Looking at art makes you a better person and that you don’t have to go to a museum to look at art. I agree with this because visual interpretation help you look at things better and art is all over the world and people barely notice that. Art is something people take for advantage and they don’t realize how amazing art is and how beneficial it is to the world. Art is a way for people to express there emotions or tell a story. Art matters to the world because its the another way to be descriptive without using words

  8. Maha Amer

I agree with you and also a person who understands and tastes art has high sensitivity and be sentimental feelings. that is my opinion.

“The Power to Look” by the Art Institute of Chicago explains the importance of details in artworks that shape our interpretations and how we perceive art. This video seeks out to answer how the ways we look at a work shape our experiences and interpretations. Many important factors such as the framing of the image or the scale at which it is captured can affect our interpretations. In Gustave Caillebotte’s “Paris Street; Rainy Day”, Scaling is used to precisely depict the difference in social classes during modern reformed France in the 1800s. Similarly, in Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled #92′, director camera shots are utilized to allow the viewer to perceive the subject through an angle the artist deliberately chose. By using this technique, Sherman can invoke the feeling of helpless of the subject unto the viewer, though it’s a high angled camera shot. Therefore, the techniques artists use directly shape how we interpret and perceive artwork.
