THE INTELLECTUAL STANDARDS (BLOG#1)

Intellectual standards are standards what applied to thinking, especially checking the quality of reasoning about a problem, condition/situation or an issue. A standard can help to measure how accurate something is. However, there are nine Intellectual Standards: Clarity, Accuracy, Precision, Relevance, Depth, Breadth, Logic, Significance, and Fairness.

First one is Clarity. I really think that this is the most important Intellectual Standard to checking the quality of a statement. Clarity is the first and opening standard. If a statement is not clear, we cannot decide whether it is accurate or not. For example: ‘’The boy was playing’’. Here its unclear. In the sentence it loses clarity because we don’t know what the boy was playing, where and when. So the statement is unclear. On the other hand, if we re-write the example like this: The boy was playing soccer at afternoon in the nearest playground. Here the statement is clear because we can easily understand the boy was playing soccer. Clearly, Clarity is the major standard I think.

Another one is Accuracy. This standard helps to find the truth of a statement. Or it verifies the information. For example: If someone says he is honest, it can be true or false. Here if we verify him by doing a test on him, we can easily find out his identity. Then his statement will show the actual outcome. If he passed the test of his honesty, then it has accuracy or truth, correct information.

One more standard is Logic. It’s important for clear or reasonable statement. Especially logic is a strong point for arguments. Accurate reasonable logic of an argument can give victory. For example: An entrepreneur tells about a specific skin care product and give a logic that the product is the best and has long-lasting results with good benefits. But if he finds out the product is suitable only for some persons not for everybody, then the logic is totally wrong. Here he can put his logic by finding/creating a skin care product which is good for everybody with good evidence so that his logic can be accurate.

Clearly, the intellectual standards have importance in may ways. It helps to upgrade our critical thinking. It helps us in our daily life, academic performance also workplace.

Fuad, your post does a good job of outlining why these standards are important, but I’m wondering how they might apply to the video.
